Federico Fazzuoli writes about The Co-operative.
Federico Fazzuoli, a well known television personality on “Linea Verde” and admirer of Caviro, never misses an opportunity to praise the Co-operative. This is why he expressed his appreciation for the work done and wrote this on their website. A very long time has passed since Raiffeisen of Austria created the Co-operative banks and after a calm period from a work and economic prospective, globalization has created a wild market opening Pandora's Box and releasing a disturbing crisis.
Fortunately there have been certain international organizations such as FAO and IFAD, two agencies of the UN, which have always sought to protect the developing world, overseeing thousands of small projects involving individuals - especially women – scattered around in small and remote villages. The system provides a loan of 100, 200, 500, up to $1000 to buy a few chickens and build a chicken house, a goat for milk, looms, the seeds to start a vegetable garden. Once they start making money, the money is returned and reinvested in other loans. This is the spirit of Raffaisen, that of expanding cooperation.
At times when the economy is thriving, a Co-operative may seem a thing of the past, something we no longer need, but we don’t need much to remind us or to help us understand that this must be a constant driving force, one of the great routes travelled by our community spirit and our ideals of justice. Financial acquisitions, joint ventures, mergers, are all well and good, but when the first problem arises, those who can run away, capital is transferred abroad, production is moved, workers and machines are left to their fate. We often see court cases and convictions passed but there is not much consolation for those who have lost their jobs.
Prevention is better than the cure or the punishment. That's why nowadays the Co-operative must be revived in all its motivating force, pride, mission, and without hindrance or hesitation.
This is the only real structure able to cope with the market demand and globalization because it is immune from the temptation of profit making and therefore more flexible and able to prevent or deal with the hardest crisis. Today, with Italy in the middle of an economic crisis, it is time to attack rather than defend. It’s time to attract new members and to form international alliances. All producers, especially agricultural ones who are not able to relocate their work, must take this challenge upon themselves: making the Co-operative the driving force of industry in the Country. If we consider some past experiences with an impartial eye it is clear to see that this can be done.
