\u201cGiving exposure to our sustainability actions\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>is not just a\u00a0duty towards our members and consumers<\/strong>. We believe our approach can be of inspiration to\u00a0adopt behaviours that are as righteous as possible\u00a0<\/strong>towards a Planet for the future generations. The recent phenomena to have hit the region of Emilia-Romagna give pause for thought and the responsibility to tackle them belongs to everyone.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

It is with the words of the President, Carlo Dalmonte<\/strong>, that the\u00a0CAVIRO GROUP<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0presents the\u00a0fourth edition of the Sustainability Report<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>

The cover page of the 2022 Report is the new\u00a0Manifesto of the Group<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cIl cerchio della vite \u2013 The circle of the vine\u201d<\/em><\/strong>, summarising the\u00a0cooperative\u2019s model of perfect circularity<\/strong>, in which the grape from the vineyard is transformed into wine, through a process in which production waste finds new value instead of being discarded, and returns to the vineyard, as fertiliser.<\/p>

Each year the Group processes<\/strong>\u00a0624,000 tons of waste:\u00a0over 99% of this finds new life<\/strong>\u00a0and only 0.1% of this is sent for disposal. With that 99%, CAVIRO demonstrates that it knows how to build concrete projects, outlined in the Sustainability Report, but aims to\u00a0\u00a0concentrate on the remaining 1%\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 THE 1% CHANCE \u2013 that represents\u00a0<\/strong>an opportunity:\u00a0the leap to improvement<\/strong>\u00a0and progress, the push to getting busy, to \u201crolling up our sleeves\u201d, filled by a sentiment of urgency and aware that there is no more time waste, working on projects in which\u00a0innovation and research are necessary tools for delivering the<\/strong>\u00a0Planet into the hands of those who will come after us.<\/p>

The Group \u2013 which represents the largest winery in Italy, with\u00a011,650 members<\/strong>, 27 wine cellars in 7 regions of Italy,\u00a037,300 hectares planted with vines<\/strong>, 600 thousand tons of grapes produced (8.5% of Italian grapes) \u2013 has launched a\u00a0path for the planning and design of initiatives in the ESG area<\/strong>, in line with long-term objectives set forth by the UN 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.<\/p>

SimonPietro Felice, General Manager of the CAVIRO Group<\/strong>\u00a0states:\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cWe exercise a real and tangible action on\u00a09 of the 17 SDGs\u00a0<\/strong>(Sustainable Development Goals), through wide-ranging initiatives and projects. We are particularly proud of the effort on goal number 6 \u2013 CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION, to which we respond with the\u00a0reuse of 40% of process water\u00a0<\/strong>(with 470 million liters of water recovered) \u2013 and on number 15 \u2013 LIFE ON LAND \u2013 thanks to the many projects in\u00a0research and development, some of which were implemented in collaboration with the University of Bologna<\/strong>\u201d.<\/em><\/p>

CAVIRO GROUP SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2022 \u2013 GOVERNANCE<\/u><\/strong><\/u><\/p>

Thanks to the\u00a0record turnover in the amount of Euro 417 million<\/strong>, the 21\/22 business year is to be considered positive for the Group on an overall performance level. The\u00a0Italian market<\/strong>\u00a0continues to be the main point of reference, representing\u00a070% of total sales<\/strong>. The\u00a0wine accounts for 61% of revenues<\/strong>, the alcohol area, must and tartaric acid account for 21%, while the share relative to the energy sector and environment is 18%.\u00a0<\/p>

Over 97% of the value generated<\/strong>\u00a0during the 21\/22 business year was\u00a0distributed to stakeholders,<\/strong>\u00a0while investments totaled 23.5 million, 64% of which went to the ESG area.<\/p>

CAVIRO GROUP SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2022 \u2013 ENVIRONMENT<\/u><\/strong><\/u><\/p>

Operating in harmony with nature means respecting the environmental equilibrium, attempting to preserve it unchanged and, where necessary, to enrich it.\u00a0The work carried out by CAVIRO originates from the land and protects its resources<\/strong>\u00a0thanks to the\u00a0reduction in consumption of water<\/strong>, in\u00a0climate-altering emissions<\/strong>\u00a0and through the production of\u00a0renewable energy sources<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>

A model able to\u00a0collect, regenerate and restore goods\u00a0<\/strong>to the consumer, semi-finished products to the industrial sector, and energy, biofuel and organic fertilisers to the common good, in a new form, with a low environmental impact, with an annual emissions saving calculated in 102,000 tons of CO2<\/sub>.<\/p>

CAVIRO EXTRA<\/strong><\/a>, a subsidiary of the CAVIRO Group, drives the\u00a0innovation in research and development of noble products\u00a0<\/strong>obtained from agro-industrial waste. Each year it collects approximately\u00a0624,000<\/strong>\u00a0tons of must, lees, pomace and wastewater<\/strong>\u00a0which it transforms\u00a0into\u00a0269,000 tons of products for new uses,<\/strong>\u00a0raw material for pharmaceutical, food, chemical, industrial companies<\/strong>.<\/p>

CAVIRO GROUP SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2022 \u2013 SOCIAL<\/u><\/strong><\/p>

Being\u00a0the largest Italian vineyard<\/strong>\u00a0implies a precise\u00a0responsibility<\/strong>\u00a0also toward the community and the territory. First, by guaranteeing food quality and safety, as demonstrated by the approximately\u00a01,150,000 analyses\u00a0<\/strong>carried out during the year at internal laboratories, then also by operating through the careful selection\u00a0of the over 4,000 suppliers<\/strong>,\u00a025%\u00a0<\/strong>of which\u00a0selected in an ESG outlook<\/strong>, and, last but not least, by protecting work conditions and those of the surrounding environment, factors which are also confirmed by the certifications obtained in an ethical-social scope such as the\u00a0SA8000\u00a0<\/strong>and the\u00a0Equalitas Cantina Sostenibile<\/strong>.<\/p>

RESEARCH PROJECTS<\/u><\/strong><\/p>

CAVIRO\u2019s commitment is embodied also through the many research projects, active or completed in 2022, the work by CAVIRO and prestigious institutions, among these, UNIBO, the University of Bologna, with its numerous departments.<\/p>

Projects which range from the vines, to the wine, to the biodegradable plastic polymers to return to the vineyard with the fertilisers made from the same by-products from the processing of the grapes.<\/p>

Here are two examples:\u00a0<\/p>

Black to the Future<\/strong>, innovation project co-financed by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), European Union, to develop and test a mix called \u201cCBmix\u201d, capable of enriching the soil with organic material, increasing the capture of CO2<\/sub>, improving the output of plants reducing the negative effect of climate change.<\/p>

B-PLAS<\/strong>, project financed by Climate-KIC and led by UNIBO, to produce bioplastic from sewage sludge. B-PLAS Demo, in fact is the first experimental system for the production of PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates), an organic and biodegradable plastic polymer, obtained from residual carbon contained in the electricity from the treatment systems of food industry waste.\u00a0<\/p>
